This is a lava bench along formed by the lava which flowed over the road. As the lava flash-cooled in the Pacific's waters, it piled up and formed this huge shelf of lava called a "bench". These structures can, and have, collapsed without warning, with great energy, and have changed the coastline overnight. Posted by Hello
